THE SONS OF ISSACHAR AFTERSCHOOL ACADEMY Our Creed: As a son of Issachar, we believe in the dignity of hard work and using our minds to develop the talents and abilities entrusted in us. We will strive to be Sons with a mind to understand the times, to do the right thing, and to seek to develop the integrity and charter hidden within ourselves. Our Vision Statement: To transform the mindset and attitudes of males between the ages of 8-15 to develop them into future young scholars. The Program Components include Leadership Development: Participants will be exposed to a variety of leadership styles. They will receive instruction on how to sharpen their vision, discover purpose in their lives, improve communication skills and explore strategies in planning career. Tutoring, Homework assistance, and Study Skill Enhancement: This component is designed to teach students how to succeed in school and be responsible for their own learning. Students will learn how to organize homework, manage time, develop good study habits, and how to prepare for tests and quizzes. Students will follow a curriculum concentrating in Reading, Math and Science. Life Skills Training: Students will be led through a series of modules designed to develop critical thinking, reasoning and problem solving skills. Module includes: Self-Esteem/Self-Concept; Self-Determination; Moderate Risk and Decision making Steps; Peer Pressure; Anger Management and Social Responsibility. Character Education: This component is designed to assist students in developing a solid foundation of ethical principles such as Integrity; Honesty; How to follow directions; Responsibility; Self-Worth and Understanding the importance of change and how to adapt. Parent and Family Support Services: Through this component our purpose is to actively involve parents in practical workshops that empower the family to address the challenges faced by children in today's society. There will be on-going monthly activities and social events that will involve both parent and youth. Transportation is Available. GIRLZ INC. An After School Enrichment Program for Middle School Girls: G.R.E.A.T. – Girls Reaching Educational Achievement Together Program Description: GIRLZ Inc. is an initiative with Myers Middle School in Louisville, Kentucky, to help 6th & 7th grade girls build academic proficiency through career exploration, technology, business enterprise/banking, mentorship and the arts. To increase the support of girls from low-income families, CCDC is working with community volunteers to provide activities that promote hands-on learning experiences for students. This comprehensive program strives to empower girls to achieve greatness as they learn practical skills designed to increase their intellectual, spiritual and personal development. Hours of Operation: Mondays & Tuesdays 2:30 p.m.to 5:30 p.m. Program Goals: 1) to improve the academic proficiency of middle school girls through hands-on learning experiences; 2) to raise the career aspirations of girls by exposing them to women from traditional and non-traditional career fields; 3) to develop interpersonal skills by promoting teambuilding exercises; and 4) to create opportunities that promote the importance of postsecondary education.
